People of all races suffer from binge eating and bulimia

Dr. Gupta spoke today on the Pix11 New York morning news about how eating disorders are not limited to white women. Recent research suggests that African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, and Caucasians are all suffering from eating disorders.

She references the following U.S. studies from 2011 and 2012:

Minorities tend to seek mental health services less than Caucasians.

Binge eating disorder affects Hispanics, African-Americans, and Caucasians at similar rates.

Bulimia is more prevalent among African-Americans and Latinos compared to Caucasians. Anorexia and binge eating disorder have similar prevlance rates across ethnic groups.

Among U.S. teens, Hispanics reported the highest rates of bulimia and Caucasians reported the highest rates of anorexia.
